Our Story

It all begins with a desire to help.

The Mt. Pleasant Baptist Educational Development Corporation (EDC) was founded in 2004 to address the educational and economic needs of the historic LeDroit Park community in Washington, D.C.

Today, we proudly serve youth and families throughout the greater Washington Metropolitan area, including DC, Maryland, and Virginia. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we provide life-changing educational programs that uplift, empower, and inspire.

Our mission is to create a supportive environment that nurtures learning, inspires creativity, and empowers individuals to reach their full potential.

Enrollment in EDC programs benefits the greater community by giving at-risk students a safe place to learn, grow, and develop a better understanding of the value of self-sufficiency and fulfilling your life’s purpose.

Children and youth who participate in the EDC programs can stay off the streets and out of trouble, learning to communicate, respect, and work as a member of the team and a part of the local community. School truancy has been reduced and overall grades have improved for participating students as their computer skills and better life skills are developed and applied to their coursework and family lives.

Additionally, for both the summer camp and the tutoring programs, the MPBEDC food program provides a wholesome hot meal and snacks for program participants.

The positive impact on an individual resident and the community as a whole is a sound testament to the value of EDC programs on the local community. Sound fiscal management and a dedicated staff of volunteers make it possible for the EDC to continue to provide high-quality programs at an extremely affordable cost or free of charge. We are a positive beacon in the local community and the greater Washington, DC metropolitan area.

Community Voices

"At the EDC, we don’t just run programs—we build pathways to purpose. Every workshop, every meal, every moment is a step toward brighter futures for our youth and families."

Sherl Streeter, President

"We started the EDC in the LeDroit Park area of Washington, D.C. with a simple mission: to serve. Today, we’re impacting lives across the region by combining cultural pride, academic support, and faith-based values."

Rev. Terry D. Streeter, Co-Founder

"I once felt overwhelmed by money matters and confused by financial terms. The EDC’s finance classes were convenient and gave me the confidence to ask questions and tools to build an emergency fund."
